Coorg for a long weekend — coffee, mist and homestays.

Coorg — officially Kodagu — is a hill district of coffee estates, cardamom forests and stubborn mist in southern Karnataka. It has become south India's default weekend escape, which means there are now two Coorgs: the one on the tourist circuit (crowded viewpoints, queue for the elephant camp) and the one a kilometre off it (an estate homestay, a walking trail through coffee, absolute silence). This guide is about spending most of your time in the second one.

Getting there — the honest options

• Fly to Bengaluru (BLR), drive 5–6 hours. The most common route and usually the cheapest flight from any Indian metro. The drive via Mysuru is good road almost the whole way; leave Bengaluru before 7am or the first two hours are traffic.
• Fly to Mangaluru (IXE), drive 3.5 hours. Shorter drive, fewer flight options, fares often slightly higher. Great if you're combining Coorg with the coast.
• Fly to Kannur (CNN), drive 4 hours. The quiet third option from Kerala's side — sometimes surprisingly cheap from Delhi and Mumbai.

There's no airport or railway station in Coorg itself — the last stretch is always by road, and that's part of the point.

Where to base yourself

Madikeri is the district capital — convenient, walkable, close to Abbey Falls and Raja's Seat, but the most touristy. Virajpet and the estates south of it are quieter and greener. Kushalnagar side puts you near Dubare and the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe but feels more like plains than hills. Our take: pick an estate homestay 15–30 minutes outside Madikeri — close enough for the sights, far enough that you sleep to crickets, not traffic.

What a good trip costs

• Estate homestays: ₹1,500–3,500 per person with breakfast and usually dinner — Coorgi pandi curry and akki roti at a family table beat any restaurant in Madikeri.
• Full weekend (per person, ex-Bengaluru): ₹8,000–14,000 including a shared cab, homestay, food and entries.
• Cab for the trip: ₹4,500–7,000 return from Bengaluru for a sedan, split between the group. Self-drive works too; the ghat roads are fine in daylight.

Three days, well spent

Day 1: arrive by lunch, walk your homestay's coffee estate with whoever runs it — this beats every paid "plantation tour" in the district — then Raja's Seat for sunset. Day 2: early start for Mandalpatti viewpoint (go by 6:30am jeep before the crowds and the mist burns off), Abbey Falls on the way back, lazy afternoon, evening in Madikeri town. Day 3: Dubare elephant camp early or skip it for the Bylakuppe monastery — quieter and genuinely striking — then the drive back.

Skip: anything sold as a "Coorg package tour" with six viewpoints in a day, and Nisargadhama on weekends — it's a picnic crowd, not a forest experience.

When to go

October to March is prime: 15–25°C, clear mornings, post-monsoon greenery. April–May is warm but fine at estate altitude. June–September is monsoon — the district turns absurdly lush and waterfalls peak, but expect leeches on trails and landslide-related road delays. Monsoon Coorg is wonderful if you plan to read on a verandah, less so if you had a jeep itinerary planned.
