Spiti Valley — India's cold desert, done right.

A moonscape at 4,000 metres, monasteries older than most countries, and a road trip that punishes hurry. Here's how to do it properly.

Spiti is not a destination you visit; it's one you climb into slowly. The valley sits between 3,000 and 4,500 metres, the villages are tiny, the phone signal is theoretical, and the landscape looks like the Himalayas traded places with Mars. Done right, it's the best road trip in India. Done in a hurry, it's a headache — literally, because altitude doesn't negotiate.

The two ways in

The classic answer: go up the Shimla side, come down the Manali side. You acclimatise on the way in and save the dramatic pass crossing for the way out.

The circuit that matters

Base yourself in Kaza and day-trip outward: Key Monastery at golden hour (the photo you came for), Kibber and the Chicham suspension bridge, Langza's giant Buddha with fossil fields behind it, Hikkim's highest-post-office-on-earth (send yourself a postcard — it works), and Komic. Give Tabo its own night on the way in; the 1,000-year-old monastery murals justify the stop alone. If the season allows, Chandratal Lake on the Manali-side exit is the finale.

What it costs

The rules that keep it fun

Spend your first night at or below Nako/Tabo altitude, not Kaza. Drink absurd amounts of water. Carry cash — Kaza has the only reliable ATMs and they run dry. Fuel up at every pump you see (there are barely three on the whole circuit). And build one buffer day into the plan: in Spiti, landslides and weather have veto power over itineraries.

Druviq tipThe cheapest way to start the circuit: fly into Chandigarh, where fares from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are consistently low, then take the overnight Volvo to Shimla or Manali. Compare Chandigarh fares on Druviq across the week — mid-week flights are often ₹1,500–2,000 cheaper than weekend departures.

Start with a cheap flight to Chandigarh.
