The Goa nobody talks about — South Goa in December.

December is peak season in Goa, and the internet will tell you two things: that it's magical, and that it's mobbed. Both are true — but only if you stay north. Calangute and Baga in the last week of December feel less like a beach holiday and more like a queue with sand in it. South Goa, an hour's drive from the same airport, is the version of December Goa the postcards actually promised.

Why south, why December

The southern beaches — Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Colva — get the exact same December weather as the north: 28–32°C days, cool evenings, zero rain. What they don't get is the same crowd density. Palolem on a December morning is quiet enough to hear the fishing boats go out. The beach shacks are open, the water is calm and swimmable, and dinner is fresh catch grilled ten metres from where it landed.

Agonda, one bay further south, is quieter still — a protected turtle-nesting beach with a strict no-loud-music rule that filters out exactly the crowd you're trying to avoid.

Where to stay and what it costs

• Beach huts in Palolem/Agonda: ₹1,800–4,000 per night in December for a sea-facing hut with a fan and a decent bed. Book by early November — the good ones go first.
• Guesthouses one street back: ₹1,200–2,000 per night, often with AC, a two-minute walk from the sand.
• Food: a full seafood thali at a local place runs ₹150–250. Shack dining on the beach is ₹400–700 per person with a drink.
• Scooter: ₹350–450/day in peak season. You will want one — the south is spread out and taxis are expensive.

Getting there cheap

Goa now has two airports: Dabolim (GOI) and the newer Mopa (GOX) in the far north. For South Goa, Dabolim is the one you want — it's 1.5 hours closer to Palolem. When comparing fares, check both codes: airlines often price them very differently on the same date, and a ₹1,500 saving into Mopa disappears fast in the extra taxi fare south.

December fares from Delhi swing between ₹4,500 and ₹12,000 one-way depending on how early you book. Aim for 8–10 weeks out; the last two weeks of December are the most expensive domestic travel days of the year in India.

The three-day shape of it

Day 1: land at Dabolim, drive south, sunset at Palolem, dinner at a beach shack. Day 2: scooter to Agonda and Cabo de Rama fort in the morning, lazy beach afternoon, kayak at golden hour (₹300/hour on Palolem beach). Day 3: the Wednesday flea vibe at Patnem if it's on, fresh-grilled lunch, and a slow drive up the coast road before your evening flight. No clubs, no queues, no regrets.
