🛕
Where to stay

Ubud: inland, cultural, surrounded by rice fields. Best for yoga retreats, art galleries, and the famous Monkey Forest. Quieter evenings.

Seminyak / Canggu: beach access, trendy cafes, surf spots. More expensive than Ubud but good value vs. European beach destinations. Canggu is the digital-nomad favourite.

Kuta: the original tourist strip — cheap, loud, and packed. Fine for one night but unlikely to be the highlight of your trip.

🍜
Food & drink

Nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), babi guling (suckling pig, a Balinese specialty) and satay lilit are the essentials.

Warungs (local eateries) serve full meals for IDR 25,000–50,000 (₹130–260). A Bintang beer costs IDR 30,000–50,000 depending on how touristy the venue is.

Budget tip: the further from the beach, the cheaper the food without any reduction in quality. The best nasi campur we had in Bali was a 15-minute walk from any tourist street.

🏄
Activities

Surfing: Kuta and Seminyak for beginners, Uluwatu for experienced surfers. Lessons start at IDR 150,000–200,000 (₹780–1,050).

Temples: Tanah Lot (sunset), Uluwatu (clifftop, Kecak fire dance), Besakih (Mother Temple, requires guide). Budget IDR 50,000–100,000 per entry.

Rice terraces: Tegalalang (very touristy but genuinely beautiful) or Jatiluwih (UNESCO-listed, less visited, more dramatic). The 20-minute drive separates them and the crowds.

Getting to Bali from India

No direct flights from Indian cities to Bali currently. All routes involve one stop — Singapore (SIN), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), or Bangkok (BKK) are the most common hubs.

Singapore transit tends to be fastest and cleanest. KL transit is often cheapest. Bangkok has good flight frequencies.

Total journey time: 8–12 hours depending on layover. Book the stopover leg separately if your layover exceeds 8 hours — you can see Singapore or KL for a few hours at no extra cost.

Bali travel FAQ.

Do Indians need a visa for Bali?
Yes. Indian passport holders can get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Ngurah Rai International Airport. Cost: IDR 500,000 (approximately ₹2,800–3,500) for 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days. Applying online for the e-VOA before travel is recommended to skip airport queues. Also budget for the separate Bali Tourist Levy of IDR 150,000 (around ₹850) and complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card online before you fly.
What is the best time to visit Bali from India?
April to October is the dry season — clear skies, lower humidity, and great beach conditions. July and August are peak season with higher prices. April–June and September–October offer good weather at lower rates. November to March is rainy season — it rains daily but usually in short bursts, and prices drop significantly.
How many days should I spend in Bali?
7–10 days is ideal. This allows 3 days in Ubud (culture, rice fields, rafting), 3–4 days in Seminyak or Canggu (beach, cafes, surfing), and a day trip to the Uluwatu cliffs and temples.
Is Bali safe for Indian tourists?
Yes. Bali is one of Southeast Asia's safest destinations. The main concerns are traffic (roads are chaotic — ride carefully on scooters), petty theft in very crowded tourist areas, and aggressive touts near temples. Standard travel precautions apply.
What currency is used in Bali?
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The exchange rate for INR is approximately 1 INR = 190 IDR. Do not exchange at the airport — rates are significantly worse. Authorised money changers in Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud offer much better rates. Avoid unofficial changers who advertise suspiciously high rates.
